Background Information
Société Générale is a universal bank. The Group consists of three main pillars backed by two business lines. Société Générale is often nicknamed SocGen in the international financial world.
Société Générale's three pillars, at the heart of the development of its relationship banking model, are:
- Retail Banking in France (Société Générale, Crédit du Nord and Boursorama)
- International Banking and Financial Services (IBFS)
- Corporate and Investment Banking (SG CIB), with investment banking and fixed income, structured financing, debt and forex activities on the one side, and equity and consulting activities on the other.
The development of these three pillars is backed by two other core activities, namely:
- Specialised Financial Services & Insurance
- Private Banking, Global Investment Management & Services
Why we want to hire veterans
Main reason is to give back to those who have served their country. We are looking to assist transitioning veterans get opportunities for full time employment within finance.

What we currently do for veterans at our company
Below are some of the things we did for/with veterans in 2018 via our Societe Generale Veterans Network:
- What are the main goals of the network?
- Work with HR to assist with SG on campus recruiting and lateral hire of veterans.
- Participate in Veteran focused community events and fund-raisers.
- Encourage a vibrant Veteran support network within the bank and across the financial industry by partnering with VOWS (Veterans on Wall Street), employment and transition focused veterans support organizations, universities and conferences.
- Raise awareness within SG relative to the unique and complex issues facing Veterans transitioning from the military.
- Enable SG employees to provide support and mentoring for veterans through various community outreach and veteran related volunteer opportunities.
- We have approximately 40 self-disclosed veterans in the Americas
- 2018 Events –
- January - Care package drive for Army 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion in Africa
- Sent over 40 boxes of snacks, toiletries and other items to US troops deployed to Africa
- Received certificate of appreciation from commanding officers of battalion
- January - Care package drive for Army 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion in Africa
- April – Sponsored the NYC Tillman Honors Run ( $5k )
- Additionally raised $1,725 for Tillman Foundation
- May – Implemented the SG Transitioning Veterans recruiting program (4 offers made to transitioning veterans
- How do we go about it?
- Partner with industry veteran groups like VOWS, Miligistix, area school veteran support groups, etc..
- Source talent pools from VOWS symposium, military career fairs and LinkedIn.
- Screen resumes / candidates to ensure good fit
- Spread awareness throughout the firm senior management as to our plan and solicit commitments from managers with available roles to consider a transitioning veteran (separated within last 7 years) for filling it.
- Once we have commitments we narrow down the pool of candidates to approx. 5 to 1 (5 candidates for every 1 commitment).
- Candidates are contacted by HR recruiting and members of the veteran network recruiting committee to prep them for the interview.
- Candidates are brought in for a superday style interviewing.
- Hiring managers make offers to qualified candidates
- Once hired
- Newly hired veterans are put through the same programs as the analyst program
- Once training completed, start their fulltime role
- A member of the veterans network management team is appointed as their mentor as well as a senior manager (assigned as mentor)
- Veteran network mentor will meet with veteran hire monthly (at minimum)
- How do we go about it?
- May – Established the Chicago Chapter of SG Veterans Network
- May - sponsored a table at the 2018 NYC Fleet Week Luncheon hosted by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to kick off fleet week
- June - Partnered with wVOWS (women veterans on wall st) to host the VOWS summer social mixer and panel discussion at SG NY Office
- Over 200 veterans and VOWS members attended event
- Suni Harford, Global head of investments @ UBS Asset Management (one of the founding members and head of VOWS) said it was the best VOWS event she had attended. Suni was recently voted #14 most powerful women in Finance by American Banker.
- Sept – Sponsored a table at Fordham University’s NYC Veteran Internship Career Fair (open to all NYC student veterans)
- Spoke to candidates about SG Opportunities, collected resumes and encouraged qualified candidates to apply to SG Junior Analyst program
- Sept – Sponsored 25 SG runners for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers walk/run.
- Raised over $1,200 for the Stephen Siller Foundation
- Sept – Sponsored 5 SG employees and 5 Veteran Clients to attend the Navy Seal Foundation Midwest Gala
- Raised over $1,000 for the The Honor Foundation at Luncheon
- October – Sponsored a table at UVets Conference in Chicago (open to all US student veterans)
- Spoke to candidates about SG Opportunities, collected resumes and encouraged qualified candidates to apply to the 2019 Veteran Hiring program
- October – Sponsored 10 veterans to attend the Chicago Veteran’s Ball.
- Raised over $750 for the Chicago Veterans Association
- October – Conducted a Volunteer event at the Jesse Brown VA Food Pantry
- Had 17 volunteers participate
- October – Partner with OSOT (Operation Support Our Troops) America to collect materials to create Care Packages for Troops abroad.
